Living in Eugene, Oregon: Friendly Area

Buying Your Next Eugene Home

The Friendly area of Eugene is a highly sought-after area right in the heart of town that makes it a great place to live. It’s bisected by Friendly Street that runs north to south through the middle of it. The street was named after Sam Friendly who was a much-loved mayor of Eugene in the 1800’s. With its central location and easy access to downtown and the University of Oregon, it’s one of the most popular areas to live in here in Eugene.

The neighborhood is outlined by West 18th Avenue to the north, Amazon Creek to the east, West 29th Avenue to Lorane Highway to the south, and Chambers Street to the west.

As I write this message in March of 2024 the median home sales price for the last six months in the Friendly area is $491,000. The majority of the homes in the area were built from the 1930s to the 1970s with a little new construction sprinkled throughout. There are a number of homes with lots of character. Cookie-cutter homes are not the norm in this part of town. The rolling hills of the College Hill neighborhood provide some picturesque views and great sidewalks to stroll with family and friends.

The Friendly area of Eugene is home to several local businesses within walking distance, including restaurants, bars, medical offices, and more. You can find the majority of them on Willamette Street, West 18th, and West 29th. Large grocery options include Albertson’s at 18th & Chambers, Market of Choice at 29th and Willamette, and Capella Market at 24th and Willamette.

The Friendly area of Eugene is a great place to live for those who lead active lifestyles with access to some of the city’s most beautiful parks that include fun activities such as frisbee golf at and even pickleball at Westmoreland Park. The area also provides easy access to the iconic Spencer Butte just south of town for a beautiful hike and the Amazon pool just east of Amazon Creek for fun in the sun during the warmer months.

Moving to the Friendly area with kids? Depending on the location of your home your kids will attend either Chavez Elementary, The Family Elementary School which also includes a Chinese Immersion school, or Adams Elementary. The area also includes Arts & Technology Academy and Roosevelt Middle Schools and for High School, they will either attend Churchill High or Oregon’s highly-rated South Eugene High.

With its awesome location and strong community feel, the Friendly area is a great place to call home in Eugene. I hope you found this information helpful. I’d love to hear from you. You can call, email, or leave a comment down below. I work hard to stay connected.
